When you are looking for a photographer, what are you hoping to find? Looking for the right photographer can be a task that ends up being either super easy or super difficult. There are many factors that you need to consider when looking for a photographer. And as a photographer, it can be the same when trying to determine if a client is the right fit as well.

Here are some basic things to know about me and what to expect from me as your photographer. And as always, if you don’t see an answer to a question you have, you can always e-mail me and I will be happy to answer you!

Where are you based?

I’m based just outside of the Winston Salem, North Carolina area.

Do you travel?

Yes! I love to travel, in fact, my husband and I are always looking for a reason to pack our bags and get on the road again. There are no travel fees if you are looking to hire me for services in the following states: Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C., South Carolina, and Florida.

What is included in travel fees if they are applied?

Travel fees include costs to get to you including lodging, airfare/gas, car rentals, and permits/fees required by the location if they are required. I will always do my best to make these minimal, and will always make you aware of my plans once they are made.

What kind of photography do you shoot?

Oh dang! That’s a big question, because I shoot almost anything and everything. From weddings at big venues to intimate backyard weddings, to portraits, to animals, to products, and everything in between. I explore and photograph the world around me, shooting for myself and for others.

How did you become a photographer?

I started out shooting for art projects in high school with a point and shoot camera my parents gave me one year. Then I started getting asked to do sessions for friends and members of my hometown community, eventually leading to me asking to assist the photographers in my hometown of Russellville, Arkansas. I started to realize that I wanted to learn more than just shooting on auto mode- then I found out about darkrooms and film. So I went to Middle Tennessee State University to learn more in depth about photography- the history, the darkroom processes, and how to present my work. It was then that I created The Witness Photography, and continued learning by assisting and shooting for photographers in the Nashville area.

What else do you do?

I also offer film scanning services, going as far as cleaning up the digital images by removing dust, color correcting, and adjusting exposure. I started doing this when I was in college, and really love the process of restoring old photographs.

I’m also working to learn how to shoot and edit videos. But please be patient with me on this one. It’s a slow process, and one that I’m teaching myself. Unlike photography where I learned more in depth during a four year program, I’m learning from YouTube, workshops, and courses offered by other videographers at my own pace. But that doesn’t mean that I’m not going to stop learning more about photography.

So you shoot with digital and film cameras?

And when I say film, I don’t mean video. I mean the 35mm and 120mm film that our parents and grandparents grew up using. That’s right! I learned how to shoot and develop film, annnnnd print in a darkroom. I decide what to shoot with (film or digital) based on the situation- if I’m shooting a reception or in low light, I’m shooting with my digital camera, a Fuji XT-3. If I’m shooting with natural light, then I’m shooting with my film camera or my digital camera. Don’t worry, I’ll go over this a lot. I already have a blog or two planned to explain more for those of you who have more questions!
